ATA – Anaesthesia Technical Assistants

Since the ATA-OTA-Gesetz of 2022 ATA is an independent regulated profession in German operating theatre work. We are deliberately building the international programme, with preparation at our own IAG nursing school.

Why ATA

Since the ATA-OTA-Gesetz of 2022, Anaesthesia Technical Assistance has been a federally regulated training profession. With the formalisation, demand has grown. Anaesthesia departments in OR work suffer structural scarcity. We operate one of the few international ATA programmes nationwide.

Our programme for ATA

Pre-selection

Applicants with OR-adjacent training in source countries (e.g. operating-room technical assistance, OR nursing).

Language

B2 as standard target, with OR-specific technical language: sterility, handovers, emergency communication.

IAG preparation

Course programme per ATA-OTA-G: anaesthesia procedures, patient monitoring, emergency management, equipment handling.

Practical hours

OR observerships at partner clinics before the exam. Real OR routine as a prerequisite.

Recognition

Support of recognition as ATA at the relevant federal-state authority.

Integration

Accompanied first shifts: mentors from the OR, shift-compatible support.

ATA recognition path

With the ATA-OTA-Gesetz 2022, ATA is an independent training profession with a federally uniform recognition route:

  • Equivalence assessment of foreign training: theory and practice hours
  • Kenntnisprüfung for material differences: prepared at the IAG
  • Adaptation programme as an alternative for partially equivalent training
  • Berufserlaubnis possible before full recognition: faster OR deployment
  • Job title 'Anaesthesia Technical Assistant (ATA)' after successful recognition

Frequently asked questions – ATA

  • ATA (Anaesthesia Technical Assistance) has been an independent federally regulated training profession per ATA-OTA-G since 2022. In our programme 'ATA' always refers to the ATA-OTA-G profession.

  • 12–18 months. Language training and IAG preparation run partially in parallel; OR observerships are bundled into the final 3 months before the exam.

  • Yes, Berufserlaubnis enables supervised deployment under responsibility of a recognised ATA or anaesthetist. That accelerates practical integration and relieves your OR early.

  • Tunisia and Türkiye. Both have structured training routes in anaesthesia technology. Translation into the German ATA profile is well manageable.
